Geospatial web services and web GIS

Introduction

As a result of the progress in ICT, much of today data, including geo-spatial data, are collected, manipulated and disseminated through web and web services. This course introduces the principles laying behind web GIS and spatial web services. The common network architectures, structures and strategies, standards, and other related technologies and progresses made are also covered.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to understand and explain the main concepts, tools, technologies, methods and strategies related to the manipulation and dissemination of spatial data through web GIS and spatial web services. Particularly, the students should be able to:

  • Describe the basic terminology related to Internet GIS, Distributed GIS and Geospatial
  • Web Services;
  • Explain different network architectures;
  • Explain and compare different strategies of client/server processes distribution;
  • Explain Open GIS and data exchange standards;
  • Explain the concepts and main features of different spatial web services;
  • Describe the main requirements for static and dynamic map publishing;
  • Describe VGI and its main advantages and limitations.
